Australian Spouse Visa Overview

The Australian Spouse Visa is for couples who are legally married and one of you is Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Initially this type of visa is issued for two years, after that time if your relationship is still genuine and continuing your application will be re-assessed and you may be eligible for permanent residence.  During the temporary period, you are permitted to live and work in Australia.

The process time is usually five – six months.

In some circumstances, such as a long term spousal relationship or having children, Australian Immigration may decide to give you a permanent visa from day one, without the need for the two year temporary period.  This will be at the discretion of Immigration.

To support your application you will be asked to provide documentation evidencing your relationship, including marriage certificate and witness statements.
