Australian Tax File Number
Arranging a tax file number is one of the first things you will need to arrange before you start working in Australia. Most employers will require you to provide them with an Australian tax file number before you start work. If you work without a tax file number you could end up paying more tax than necessary. Once you have a tax file number, you will be taxed at the much lower rate (29%).

Obtaining your Australian tax file number is a simple process. You will need to visit the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), you will be required to produce a current form of identification. i.e. Passport, driving licence.

You can sort out your tax file number before you leave home, giving you one less thing to do once you reach Australia. When applying for your tax file number online, the tax file registration system will then compare your details with those which are held on the DIMIA systems (from your working holiday visa application). However your tax file number will not be issued until you enter Australian due to government policies.
